Applying for funding can be a daunting process. LAS and UIC have various offices that provide resources, information, guidance, and support. Please click on the accordion tabs below to access the Grants 101 presentation and learn more about what each office does and where to find it on the web. And remember: All external proposal submissions must go through your designated pre-award manager to ensure internal and external guidelines are followed.

Grants 101: A Guide for the Perplexed
If you are new to the process of submitting proposals at UIC or have limited experience with grant preparation, please view the recording and/or slide deck, Grants 101: A Guide for the Perplexed.
This presentation, given jointly by the LAS Research Development Office and the LAS Office of Social Science Research in fall 2022, is aimed at faculty in the social sciences and humanities, but provides basic information for everyone about different types of funding and the steps involved in preparing and submitting an application through UIC systems. Since OSSR only serves a subset of departments in LAS, for other departments, the role of OSSR described in this presentation will be taken largely by each respective department’s pre-award manager (or in some cases, by a combination of the manager and the Research Development Office). Please use the buttons above to find your designated pre-award manager and reach out to the Research Development Office to let us know your needs. Researchers in the humanities and social sciences, please learn more about OSSR below.
LAS Office of Social Science Research
The Office of Social Science Research handles all pre- and post-award needs for the majority of LAS departments in the humanities and social sciences, except Psychology, Economics, and the Learning Sciences Research Institute (use the button above to find your pre-award manager). If your department is served by OSSR please make sure to contact OSSR Director Eve Ali Boles (eali@uic.edu) for assistance with proposals.

UIC Office of Research Development
Not to be confused with the LAS Research Development Office, the UIC Office of Research Development serves the entire university and has a wealth of well-organized information: they maintain up-to-date lists of limited submission and internal funding opportunities; offer a slate of live and recorded training events; provide access to useful subscription resources; and support large-scale multi-disciplinary collaborations. We urge you to explore the site and make sure to subscribe to their newsletter and learn about the Pivot funding database (in the Find Funding section of their web site).

UIC Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations
The UIC Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations maintains a list of private funding opportunities and offers personal, one-on-one assistance with identifying and applying for private foundation funding, including personal consultation and editorial review to ensure your narrative is pitched appropriately for the sponsor’s mission. Use their on-line intake form at the link below to request a meeting. Our office works closely with Corporate and Foundation Relations on proposal development and would be happy to join your meeting to learn about your needs.

UIC Office of Sponsored Programs
The UIC Office of Sponsored Programs provides instructions for how to prepare and submit proposals for internal review using the electronic proposal routing form in the MyResearch portal; maintains a vast library of all pertinent policies and institutional information; sets up PI accounts in federal systems such as Research.gov and eRA Commons; provides information about sponsor-required training and IRB; and most importantly they are the office that ultimately submits your proposal to the sponsor after conducting an internal review. Proposals are due to OSP 5 business days prior to your sponsor deadline. Keep in mind your department’s pre-award grant manager will assist you with this process, so please be sure to contact them at least 6 weeks (or as far as possible) prior to your deadline.

UIC Libraries Scholarly Communications
Scholarly Communications Librarian Sandy DeGroote curates a wealth of information related to the dissemination of research, much of which is relevant to complying with requirements for public access to federally-sponsored research. For new investigators, this can also be a good place to learn about how to manage your on-line scholar profile (ORCID, MyNCBI, publication indices, etc). This page also contains links to the Digital Scholarship and Data Management resources, described separately below.
UIC Library Data Management Planning
The University Library has curated a number of resources to help researchers manage their data and create the data management plans required by many sponsors. Visit this web page to learn about DMP requirements and how to address them. Our office works with Data Management Librarian Abigail Goben to help ensure DMPs address all required questions. Professor Goben is also available to meet with departments or research groups to discuss field-specific data management needs. Contact Anna for details.

UIC Library Digital Scholarship Hub
The Hub supports digital scholarship and humanities experimental research and instruction. Resources useful for grant proposal development include training in a variety of digital tools that can be used to provide metrics and data visualizations as well as resources for impactful dissemination of research results. Make sure to review the upcoming workshops and the archive of recorded past workshops.
